Preventive Care
Practicing good oral hygiene and attending regular 6 month checkups with your dentist help keep your smile bright and healthy. Below are a few ways you can prevent the build-up of plaque and cavities:
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft or medium-bristled toothbrush. Brush gently in a circular motion. Use fluoride free toothpaste to remove food particles and plaque from the tooth surfaces. Also be sure to brush the top surface of your tongue; this will remove any extra plaque-causing food particles, foul-smelling bacteria, and help keep your breath fresh!
- Clean between your teeth by flossing at least once a day. Decay-causing bacteria can linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach.
- Tongue scrapers are one more step toward optimal oral health as it removes bad smelling bacteria and bacteria that causes periodontitis.
It’s important to remember that even with diligent brushing and flossing, a thin film of plaque can still accumulate on your teeth and gums. Left untreated, it can cause everything from cavities to gingivitis. That’s why the American Dental Association recommends that you have your teeth cleaned and examined once every six months.
